🍔 Big Relief for Food Businesses: FSSAI Introduces 'Lifetime' License Rule in 2026

Great News for Restaurant Owners, Cloud Kitchens, Cafes, and Kirana Store Owners!
If you run any business that manufactures, processes, packages, or sells food in India, you are well aware of the anxiety associated with FSSAI license renewals. For years, food business operators (FBOs) had to jump through administrative hoops every 1 to 5 years just to renew their licenses, often paying heavy late fees if they missed the deadline.
In a massive regulatory shift in 2026, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has officially ended this headache by introducing the Perpetual (Lifetime) License framework.
1. What is the New FSSAI Lifetime License Rule?
Under the new 2026 regulations, once an FSSAI Basic Registration or State/Central License is granted to a Food Business Operator, it comes with perpetual validity.
This means:
- No More Expiry Dates: Your license will not suddenly expire after 1, 3, or 5 years.
- No More Renewal Applications: You do not have to fill out complex renewal forms or wait weeks for an inspector to approve your renewal.
- Condition of Validity: The license remains valid for your lifetime as long as you pay a nominal annual continuation fee and strictly adhere to the food safety, hygiene, and sanitary guidelines laid out by the FSSAI.
2. Who is Eligible?
The new rules apply across all three tiers of the FSSAI framework, though the turnover thresholds have been slightly adjusted:
- Basic Registration (Petty Food Businesses): For small startups, home bakers, cloud kitchens, and small dhabas with an annual turnover of up to ₹1.5 Crore.
- State License: For medium-sized restaurants, caterers, and food distributors with an annual turnover between ₹1.5 Crore and ₹50 Crore.
- Central License: For large-scale manufacturers, importers, and businesses operating in multiple states with a turnover exceeding ₹50 Crore.
Note: Even street food vendors are now being integrated into a "Deemed Registration" process to ease their compliance burden.
3. Why You Must Apply NOW
If you are currently operating without an FSSAI license, or if you were delaying your application because you didn't want the hassle of renewals, this is your golden opportunity.
Operating a food business without a valid FSSAI license is a criminal offense in India, attracting penalties of up to ₹5,00,000 and up to 6 months of imprisonment. Furthermore, platforms like Zomato, Swiggy, and Blinkit will permanently ban your outlet if your FSSAI registration is invalid.
With the new lifetime rule, the government has also implemented Risk-Based Inspections. This means if you are unregistered, their new AI-driven monitoring systems and surprise squads are much more likely to catch you.
4. Skip the Bureaucracy. Get Your Lifetime License Today.
Applying for an FSSAI license on the government portal can still be highly confusing. Selecting the wrong food category code (KOB) or uploading incorrect premises proofs leads to instant rejection, wasting your application fee.
